Before planning to elope in Rhode Island it’s important to note that the concept of elopement has evolved significantly and become popularized in modern times.  Merriam-Webster Dictionary reflects this shift in meaning, noting that “Elope’s meaning is shifting towards ‘a small destination wedding’ whereas it used to mean ‘to run away and secretly get married.'”

Marriage Requirements in the State of Rhode Island

Obtaining a marriage license in Rhode Island is quick and straightforward. The couple should apply in person at the town clerk’s office in the town where one of them resides or where they plan to marry if they are from out of state. Proof of birth and identification is required, with specific documents outlined by the Rhode Island Department of Health. The license is issued immediately and is valid for three months. Weddings may be performed by civil servants or ordained ministers, including online ones. The ceremony must be witnessed and signed by two witnesses above the age of 18 (aside from the officiant). Additionally, the marriage license should be registered with the town within 72 hours.
